Rotary Clubs found throughout the world are involved every day in various humanitarian projects such as local parks or taking a major role in eradicating polio as a crippling disease to children. The clubs offer scholarships to local high schools and honor teachers for their work in educating our children. The Smith Mountain Lake and Rocky Mount Rotary Clubs are actively involved in these efforts.
The current projects of the Rotary Clubs include:
The Rotary Playground project consists of designing, purchasing and installing playground equipment for the Smith Mountain Lake Park in Moneta, Virginia. The park is located in Franklin County and is being developed by Franklin County Parks & Recreation to provide a family oriented, ADA equipped facility for fishing and family recreation. The objective of the playground project is to provide facilities for all Franklin County children, including those of ADA families. The playground is designed for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 and will promote health and fitness in those groups.
The Smith Mountain Lake Park will be the only public park in Franklin County with access to Smith Mountain Lake. The primary focus of the park is a unique fishing pier fully designed for ADA residents to be able to fish and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the lake. The playground equipment will be in compliance with all federal, state and local safety and ADA rules and regulations. The park will be available to all residents without cost. Children of all backgrounds will have access to the playground.
Location: Franklin County's Smith Mountain Lake Park is located in Moneta, Virginia, on the south side of the lake, off Rt. 616 (Scruggs Road). From Rt. 616, turn left on Rt. 949 (Bluewater Drive), right on Saunders Farm Rd., right on Winding Waters Rd., and left on Parkway Drive. Follow Parkway Drive to Franklin County's Smith Mountain Lake Park.
The park is currently under construction. The primary road has been established through the park. Shoreline stabilization in major erosion areas is underway. The ADA fishing pier is being built. Early site work on the playground area has been done. The primary playground equipment has been purchased and is in storage waiting the community build day later this summer. Fundraising activities are raising monies to pay for this equipment.
You can be a part of this playground project. Sponsorships are available naming you or your company as a member of the team building this playground. Sponsors will be listed on a permanent playground marker. Pavers with your name prominently emblazoned will be placed in a highly visible location on the playground. And a Ford F-150 truck will be raffled at the Rocky Mount 4th of July fireworks celebration.
All fundraising activities will include the Rotary name and identification. Publicity plan includes local and regional newspapers, magazines and other media. Community public relations program is planned to encourage citizen participation the day of the community build.
